In the US today 22,000,000 people are struggling with addiction. Another 25,000,000 are in recovery. Sadly, 370 people lose their lives to this insidious disease every day – that’s 15 every hour.
California has led the nation in opioid related deaths, a distinction no one wants. There were nearly 30,000 deaths from opioid overdose in 2014; 4395 of those were citizens of California. One of those was my son.
On December 21, 2014 we lost our son James to an accidental overdose just two days before his 27th birthday after a long struggle with both depression and addiction.
As I’ve struggled to find meaning in my loss, I became involved with Shatterproof, a life-changing organization committed to ending drug and alcohol addiction and the stigma associated with it.
I feel personally invested in the cause and believe in the importance of bringing this discussion out of the shadows to help the millions of people who are affected by addiction.
This is where I need your help. I am the chairman of the 2017 Shatterproof Challenge Rappel Orange County. On Thursday, June 15th I will be rappelling down 16 stories at 620 Newport Center Drive to end the stigma of addiction.
I hope you will join me in supporting Shatterproof by making a gift today.
If you would like to learn more or get your company involved, please don’t hesitate to reach out and I will connect you with Shatterproof.
